Periodontal Services

The term “periodontal” means around the tooth.  Periodontal disease, also known as periodontitis and gum disease, is a common inflammatory condition which affects the supporting and surrounding soft tissues of the tooth as well as the jawbone itself when in its most advanced stages. Periodontal disease, one of the most common dental problems in America, is caused by toxic bacteria that infect the gums and other supportive structures of the mouth. Surprisingly, many people with periodontal disease do not realize they are affected with the condition. The mildest form of the disease, gingivitis, is characterized by swelling and redness in the gums. Gingivitis can also cause gums to bleed easily while brushing and flossing. If left untreated, gingivitis can advance to periodontitis, causing tooth loss, recession, bad breath, and more serious health concerns.

There are options available for treatment depending on how far along your periodontal disease has progressed. Just as everyone needs to have their teeth cleaned regularly, those with periodontal disease will need to have periodontal maintenance on a more frequent routine basis determined to best fit the patient’s condition after root scaling and planing has been performed. This care usually includes a thorough appointment to remove the bacteria from the teeth and surrounding tissues. During a typical visit, the areas along the tooth and any exposed root surfaces above and below the tissue are thoroughly cleaned with a number of aids to ensure excellent care. This prevents bacteria from building up aside tooth deposits and enables the dental professional to remove any diseased tissues that prevent healthy gums and bone. In addition, our office offers medicaments for periodontal pockets to remove bacteria.

Regular screenings by a dental professional are the best way to protect your smile from gum disease.

What are people saying?

“Our entire family has been using Williams Family Dentistry for many years. Their communication is always great and prompt, the office is beautiful and comfortable (love the views of the woods from the cleaning chairs). All the hygienists are excellent. On this visit Sarah recognized that I was having a little discomfort at one point during the cleaning and said–no problem, let’s do this another way–which was so nice and appreciated!”

“Everything was seamless from scheduling, prompt check in, and right on time for my appointment. The office was beautifully decorated. I appreciated the thoroughness of my hygienist and Dr. Shanna. Thank you for making my family feel well cared for.”
Peggy S

“Impeccable as always, from the warm greeting by name as I entered, to the caring staff and services provider by all. I could not have asked for more calming hospitality in what for most, could be an unnerving experience, going to the dentist.”
